The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has extended the services of 32 corps members in the 2016 Batch A stream 1 posted in Ekiti State to three months for various misconducts such as truancy.

The NYSC Coordinator in Ekiti State, Mrs Eze Ukagha, disclosed this on Friday in Ado-Ekiti during the passing out parade of the remaining 1,380 corps members.

Ukagha said that two out of the 1,422 corps members posted to the state for the batch, however, received state honours award for hard work and commitment to the values of the scheme.

The coordinator said NYSC would not tolerate any act capable of undermining its aims and objectives.

She, however, said during the one year service, the corps members acquired entrepreneurial skills that would enable them to be independent after their service and be employers of labour, rather than job seekers.

Ukagha said that most of the corps members in the batch demonstrated unalloyed patriotism during the service year and were worthy ambassadors of their fatherland

The state coordinator, therefore, called on them to build on the existing foundation of the scheme by contributing their quota to the development of the country.(NAN)

It was really a bad day when a bullion van belonging to a commercial bank has killed two persons and injured three prospective JAMB candidates who were waiting for their PIN number after registering at a Skye Bank branch in Nasarawa, Lafia.

According to an eyewitness, the incident occurred at about 3pm on Tuesday,  when the driver of the van said to be on top speed lost control of the Toyota Hilux pick-up van. He then rammed into a commercial motorcycle rider conveying a JAMB candidate.

An eye witness said that the reckless van driver was also eating while driving.
He said, “The vehicle crushed the okada rider, his passenger and then knocked down three other persons standing along the road. The okada rider died on the spot while the JAMB candidate later died the same day at about 6pm at the Dalhatu Araf Specialist Hospital where she was rushed to for treatment.”

One of the victims, who spoke on his sickbed, Mr James Chima, said,  “I was standing by the roadside beside the Skye Bank premises when suddenly a police van rammed into me and I found myself under the vehicle.”

Another eyewitness, whose sister was hit by the van, said he narrowly escaped being hit by the vehicle. He said, “I was with my sister, Aisha Ikpanago, who had just completed her JAMB registration process in Skye Bank and we were discussing when suddenly the police vehicle knocked her down and hit other prospective JAMB candidates.”

Ikpanago could not speak when she was visited in the hospital as she was writhing in pain.

The police spokesman in the state, DSP Idrisu Kennedy, confirmed the incident, but noted that the vehicle involved in the accident belonged to a bank and not the police. He said investigation had commenced into the accident.

The management of the University of Ilorin has described the demand for the resignation of the Vice Chancellor of the University, AbdulGaniyu Ambali, by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, as “unwarranted” and “mischievous”.

In a press statement yesterday, the University’s spokesman, Mr. Kunle Akogun, said it was preposterous to ask Mr. Ambali, whom he described as “an excellent captain”, to quit, adding, “No excellent captain quits midstream”.

The Ibadan Zone of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), had called on Prof. Ambali to honorably resign his appointment to allow for an independent investigation of fraud allegations against him.

But Mr. Akogun, in his reaction, said the union was only bent on destroying the peace and progress of Unilorin simply because all attempts to hijack the progressive ASUU at Unilorin had been rebuffed
by the University lecturers.

“Dispassionate watchers of events at the University of Ilorin, especially since the University began to gain national prominence and acclaim as a socially responsible, generally peaceful, academically
excellent and qualitatively most sought-after citadel of learning in the country, are familiar with the antics of a few dissidents who are bent on taking us back to Egypt,” he said.

“Indeed, these enemies of progress cannot reconcile themselves with why a University would consistently receive national and international accolades!

“Within the last one year, the activities of these disgruntled elements are targeted at disrupting our well-known uninterrupted academic calendar.”

Commenting further, Mr. Akogun alleged that ASUU’s “unconscionable attempt to destroy the good image, which the University has toiled so hard to build over the years, will continue to fail and their ploy to divert management’s attention from its set goal of building a world class citadel of learning will not work!”

“The call on the Vice-Chancellor to resign based on some spurious allegations, is therefore unwarranted as it is mischievous,” he said.
